This second book about Connell's experiences as a lodge manager and guide is every bit as engaging as "Msomi and Me." (See my review.) Whereas "Msomi and Me" was told in a chronological narrative, this one is basically a series of vignettes. It's equally well-told, moving smoothly from one incident to the next. Since I'm obsessed with elephants, I particularly enjoyed those sections of the book, but there's something for all interests. It was a delight to "revisit" old friends--both human and animal--from the earlier book. I enjoyed the stories told by the Africans explaining--similarly to Greek myths--how certain animals came to look the way they do. As an intriguing side-dish (pun intended) he also, as in "Msomi and Me," included some recipes in the back of the book. Once again I hated to get to the last page. I really hope he will write another book about this period in his life--I'm sure there IS a lot more to tell.
Another book by Mr. Connell sharing stories from the African bush. His affinity for elephants is especially interesting. After helping rescue a very young elephant from dangerous mud, the mother elephant actually comes to thank him. Impossible, you say. But as the story unfolds we learn the depth of elephants' emotions, and the response of this man. It is a heart warming story. I did not want the book to end. It is more than interesting, it is engrossing.
I was born in Duivelskloof South Africa 1945. My Dad and Mom cut their eye teeth in the kruger Park and so from the day my twin sister and I can remember are the animals and every holiday in the park. Wish we could have experienced the joy Brian did with the elephants and all the wild life. That would make my dream come true. I miss the old South Africa Krueger Park just small thorn game fences around the camp and all sitting around the camp fire with the stories of the days sighting's. I have loved every minute of your book. Now on to the next one. Thank you Brian.
Wonderful account of the true Africa. The author indeed lives a magical life with the wildlife and his wonderfiul African friends. This he relates this beautifully.
Great style writing....my cup of tea. It's as if I'm right there. Loved it.
